Supervision

Introduction

Effective supervision is an integral part of safeguarding adults practice. The quality of supervision is a significant factor in retaining staff and ensuring continuing professional development.

Each partner agency of the Pan Lancashire and Cumbria Safeguarding Adult Boards should have its own supervision policy and procedures to which managers, employees and volunteers should consult and abide.


Principles

Supervision supports staff to develop effective relationships with other professionals, Adults at Risk and their family and carers. It should enable practitioners to make professional judgements and effective decisions.

Supervision should be educative, supportive, empowering and useful to the supervisee, the supervisor and the organisation. It should be sensitive to an individual’s ethnic and cultural background, disability, gender and sexual orientation.

It is an environment in which staff should be able to reflect on their practice, consider their professional developmental and learning needs, review actions to address such needs and subsequently evidence practice improvement.


Supervision Function and Process

Functions

There are four main functions to the supervision process. These are:

  • Support;
  • Practice reflection;
  • Professional development;
  • Management, including performance management.

The Supervision Process

Expectations of the supervisor and supervisee should be discussed at the start of a new supervisor / supervisee relationship, and reviewed as necessary during the course of the relationship. Expectations may include:

  • Structure and content of supervision sessions;
  • Frequency and location of sessions;
  • The completion of supervision agreements and regular reporting mechanisms of supervision sessions;
  • How to address complaints or disagreements from either party;
  • The circumstances in which an unplanned supervision may be required by either party, and how that should be arranged;
  • Who monitors the supervision process;
  • Storage of supervision records;
  • Who can access supervision records and under what circumstances.
